Facebook is an interesting place. It is a crock pot of peoples lives and opinions. You can find a group for literally any topic you wish and connect within moments to people that are searching for and experiencing the exact same thing as you. Yes, Facebook is nothing new so why am I Just now bringing this up? Well I should state that this entry has nothing to do with Facebook or even really social media. It is simply the medium that brought todays topic to my attention.
So, I was scrolling through my feed (typical summer boredom) and there was video posted of two boys on a boat, dragging along a live shark. My friends above comment being "Who gives a fuck?! It's a shark". This hit me relatively hard. First, because I have always been fascinated by the ocean and have a deep love for sharks and all ocean organisms. Watching the boys laughing while pointing at the struggling and hurting shark, broke my heart and I wanted nothing more then to jump through the video and put a stop to it. Second, was my friends comment. He honestly didn't care about the pain the creature was going through. This furthered my own heartbreak because I realized that he wasn't the only one like this. Yes, in the comments several people voiced my same concern but there are other people (as shown clearly in the video) that think that stuff like this is alright. It's just a shark? Right?.... WRONG! Just because it can't voice its agony and beg you to just let it go doesn't mean that it doesn't experience that fear and pain. Animal have the same instincts that we share and we are ignorant to think otherwise! I have nothing against hunting, let me just put that out there right now. I get that to an extent, we need to eat too and that we have to kill some animals in order to survive. However, in this post I am talking about the killing that happens on our planet just for mere entertainment. Over time humanity has gained this mentality that we are superior to all other creatures on this planet. That the life of a insect, a bird, a deer, a mouse, and yes even a shark is somehow ours for the taking. We couldn't be more wrong. I know I sound like an environmentalist hippie but we are all one. You see, Earth has these things called Ecosystems. All of which intertwine and build off of one another. Each and every creature plays into these ecosystems. If one is destroyed another feels those affects. WE feel those affects. Since sharks inspired this post let me just give you a bit of an example of how we are affected by the lives of creatures that apparently have no value. Sharks are the alpha predators at the top of the ocean food chain. They maintain the oceans species that are below them in the food chain. They keep the oceans populations healthy and well proportioned for their ecosystem. Sound familiar? They also serve as our indicators are to the overall health of the ocean. According of an article found at sharksavers.org, sharks are "often considered by scientists to be "Keystone" species, meaning that removing them cause the whole structure to collapse." Wow! Imagine that for a second. The entire ocean failing because we were ignorant in thinking that we are so much better then everyone and everything else. When the truth is we are all one in the same. All connected and working together to survive. We need them to survive just as much as they need us. I think that it is time that we step down from our pedestals and start actually caring about the world around us. To start showing the creatures that support our lives a bit more respect and compassion.
